Should Dogs Eat Apples (and other common human food questions)

As a dog owner, it’s tempting to give your dog a variety of foods because there are so many great tastes that we humans enjoy, especially when living in a foodie city like Asheville, North Carolina! 

However, giving your fur baby people food is not always a wise thing to do. Dogs metabolize food differently than humans and are susceptible to accidental poisoning and food-related illnesses. While there are a few things that both you and your pup can enjoy together, there are also some things you’ll want to stay far away from.  

Just to be safe, always check with your veterinarian first, but here is a short list of common human foods and whether or not they should be ingested by your pup.

Apples 

These are good!  Apples have essential vitamins such as vitamins A and C, as well as dog-friendly minerals, potassium. They also contain fiber which is good for your fur baby’s digestive system.

Carrots

Carrots are actually great for dogs. You pup can enjoy these veggies raw or cooked just like humans. Carrots are jam-packed with vitamins and minerals, which help your dog stay fit and healthy.

Peanut Butter

This is another delicious and safe food for dogs if you give them salt-free versions in moderate amounts. Do note that peanut butter is highly calorific so dogs can gain weight if they have too much.

Grapes and Raisins

These are a definite no-no!  Grapes and raisins contain compounds that are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure quickly.  Keep out of reach and away from your pup at all times. 

Chocolate

Chocolate is not a four-legged friendly food!  Dogs should never have chocolate because it contains caffeine and theobromine, which dogs can’t metabolize. This could, in worse cases, cause internal bleeding, seizures, and death. 

Onions

While commonly used in our own recipes, onions should not be consumed by your pup.  Onions contain N-propyl disulfide, which is a compound toxic to dogs.

Remember, be sure to check with your vet for specific dietary instructions, but these will give you a good idea of what should be OK and what to avoid.  It’s also helpful to keep a list of approved foods for your pup handy for future reference.  This is helpful for friends, guests, and pet sitters, like Asheville Pawz, who might come into contact with your fur baby.
